Coming Up This Month: December

Sand Snowman

December is a month of mixed emotions for Hawaii – it is a time of joy and excitement about the holidays, but also sadness and reflection on December 7th, the anniversary of the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. We’ve listed a number of events going on but as always, please feel free to comment with more if we’ve missed anything!

USS Arizona Memorial Ceremony

This year’s event keynote speaker will be Secretary Max Cleland of the American Battle Monuments Commission. If you are interested in attending, please note that free public parking will be available at Aloha Stadium, with free shuttle service to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center beginning at 6:00 AM. All attendees must be at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument no later than 7:00 AM. There is no admission fee for this ceremony.

Pearl Harbor Memorial Day Parade
December 7th, 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM
The 72nd Anniversary Pearl Harbor Parade will begin with an opening ceremony at Fort DeRussey at 5:00 PM. A closing ceremony and concert will follow at Kapiolani Park.

Honolulu City Lights Festival

Starting at 4 PM, there will be food booths, keiki (children’s) rides and souvenir booths open at Honolulu Hale (City Hall). Then at about 6:30 PM, Mayor Kirk Caldwell will light the City’s tree, which triggers the illumination of all the lights on the trees and buildings from the Civic Center to Chinatown. There is an Electric Light Parade with floats, buses, fire trucks and more and Santa will make an appearance! At the conclusion of the parade, stick around for the holiday concert and entertainment.

Honolulu Marathon
December 8th, 5:00 AM – 2:00 PM
The Honolulu Marathon draws runners from all over the world, excited at the prospect of racing along the scenic south shore of Oahu. If you would like to join the race, you may still do a walk in registration at the Marathon Expo, being held at the Hawaii Convention Center from December 4th through December 7th. If you would prefer to cheer on the participants, the course information is provided here.

Billabong Pipe Masters
December 8th – December 20th
The Billabong Pipe Masters is the culmination of both the Vans Triple Crown and the ASP Men’s World Tour. The Pipe Masters title is incredibly prestigious in the surfing world, as those who can claim it have successfully surfed the Banzai Pipeline. Pipeline is known as one of the most dangerous waves on the planet, as well as one of the most perfect ones to ride. Its close proximity to the shore makes it great for spectators. The competition will only run if the conditions are right, so be sure to check the website every day to see if it’s happening.
